Math Tutor - HSC - Mathematics Extension 1 and 2, 2 unit, General + all other grades!

My name is Jacques and I am an experienced and highly capable mathematics tutor based in Sydney southwest. I specialise in teaching HSC mathematics and science courses to high-achieving year 11 - 12 students, seeking to achieve their fullest potential. I also cater for students in years 9 and 10 who are interested in getting a head start for their critical later years.

HSC courses offered: (click here for my credentials)

  • Mathematics Extension II (4 unit)
  • Mathematics Extension I (3 unit)
  • Mathematics (2 unit)
  • General Mathematics
  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • Economics

I teach in small classes not exceeding 5-10 students per class and students attend on a weekly basis. I also provide an online forum to allow me to answer my students' questions throughout the week. This way, they can receive help while they do their homework, instead of having to wait until the next weekly lesson.

Highly Qualified tutor:

I am currently a final-year student at the University of New South Wales, completing my Commerce / Engineering combined degree. In terms of marks, I am currently maintaining a High Distinction average across all of my courses. My UAI was 99.55, when I did my HSC a few years ago. I also have many years of experience in teaching younger students (years K - 10) and I am very familiar with NSW Board of Studies mathematics syllabi for all years. I am very popular with my students, and past graduates of mine have done very well (most have achieved well over 90+, or Band 6).

So whether you or your child is aiming for a 99+ UAI or just need some remedial math help, I'm confident I can assist. Please have a look at the other sections of this site for more details, including my teaching style, and experience for further information.

University level mathematics:

I am also able to tutor students in university math courses and security products as a work as a security consultant part time. I do not run uni classes, as the content taught varies significantly between students. If you are interested in university tutoring, please contact me for details.

I have been a HSC tutor for the past four years and have taught over 200+ students in HSC Maths, Physics and Chemistry. I am in my final year at UNSW studying BSc(Maths) / BArts(Education).

In terms of credentials, I am maintaining a High Distinction average across all of my university courses. I completed my HSC many years ago and achieved a UAI of 99.85. My HSC maths marks were 99 for Extension II and 99 for Extension I.

I am also the winner of the UNSW Mathematics Teachers Scholarship which I have held for the past four years.

Of course, high marks rarely correlate to good teaching skills, which in my opinion are more important than credentials when it comes to finding a good tutor. Therefore I invite you to have a read of the other sections of my website detailing my past experience as a tutor, as well as my teaching style, before making up your mind.

I have a real passion for teaching. What I enjoy most is being able to help students who are willing to put the work in, to achieve their goals. My high UAI allowed me to choose more lucrative and high-powered careers (Law, Commerce, Medicine etc) but I chose to do a engineering degree instead because it is what I enjoy doing. I am confident I will make an excellent teacher.

For grades 9 - 10

I run classes for younger grades. Year 9 and 10 is a great opportunity to give students a significant headstart by building fundamentals early. I teach my year 9 and 10 students topics which will be revisited and reused again and again throughout their Preliminary and HSC years. A strong fundamental background is important for young students in these grades, so that they may begin their critical last 2 years with a solid grasp of basic concepts.

For HSC students:

I remember well what it was like to be a HSC student. To have ambitions of a high UAI can be stressful. Having to deal with the uncertainty of what UAI you'll get is a huge psychological burden. However, getting a sufficiently high UAI is the practical part, and that's where I help.

Of course, even if your child is unsure about what he/she wants to do yet, getting the highest UAI possible keeps your options open. The last 2 years of high school, culminating to the HSC, determines a large aspect of your future career as it determines what you will be doing in university. Therefore, maximising one's UAI opens the most doors.

As reflected by my university degree and HSC results, mathematics is my strong point and area of focus. Highly scaled subjects such as Math Ext II and Math Ext I are absolutely important in achieving a high UAI (breaking the 99+ barrier, as we used to call it!). (For more details on how scaling works, click here) Ask around, and you will find that the vast majority of Maths Extension II students receive some form of tutoriing help. The case is similar with Math Ext1, because both courses are undeniably two of the most demanding courses in the HSC. But they also can be two of the most rewarding, due to scaling..

Five years experience in home-tutoring:

I have been a mathematics tutor since late 2004. During this time, I have taught well over 100 successful students. I am highly experienced at teaching all of the available HSC math courses, as well as university maths subjects.

I have worked at several tutoring colleges:

In addition to tutoring experience, I have also worked at a number of major and reputable tutoring colleges. From time to time I've also worked on one-off projects where I write chapters for textbook authors, or teaching materials for tutoring colleges.

How I am different:

What you will often find when looking for a tutor is that most are relatively inexperienced, and are recent graduates themselves. HSC students often become tutors immediately after they graduate, and chances are, they forget most of the subject they are teaching because their university course is irrelevant to the subject they teach.

The flipside is older tutors who are more experienced with the coursework, but often can not relate to the student's frame of mind, and how they approach a problem. Often these older tutors are prohibitively expensive too.

What I offer is a combination of both: I have several years experience in this field, and I can approach a problem from the student's perspective, which helps in identifying faults in understanding. I feel that this combination is very important, and was responsible for much of my past successful students.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.
